Arequipa — The ‘White City’
Founded in 1540, Arequipa, often called the ‘White City’ due to its stunning architecture made from volcanic white sillar stone, offers a unique blend of colonial charm, modern amenities and adventurism in the Peruvian Andes. Nestled in a valley surrounded by snow-capped volcanoes, including the famous Misti Volcano, at an altitude of 7,638 ft, Arequipa boasts a year-round pleasant climate with warm days and cool nights. With a population of 960,000, Arequipa is one of Peru’s largest and most important cities.
Its historic center is anchored by the Plaza de Armas UNESCO World Heritage Site, a stately main square flanked on its north by the 17th-century neoclassical Basilica Cathedral, the largest cathedral in Peru.
Having been a site of rebellions against Spanish rule and home to notable political and religious figures, Arequipa is a center of Peruvian history. It’s known as the “Heroic city of the free people of Arequipa”, with a rich history and vibrant culture. It’s also known for its delicious cuisine, including the ever popular ceviche and traditional Rocoto Relleno.
Arequipa is a popular destination for adventure tourism, with opportunities for hiking, trekking and white-water rafting. It’s also the starting point for visiting Colca Canyon, the second deepest canyon in the world.
60 miles from Arequipa, the provinces of Caravelí, Camaná and Islay have access to the South Pacific Ocean, with countless beaches that seem to come out of a postcard. They are all a must if your adventure is sailing, fishing or surfing.
Arequipa has a thriving arts scene, with numerous museums, art galleries and cultural events. It is a safe and welcoming city with many English speakers, excellent healthcare and a strong sense of community. A great place to experience the beauty and culture of Peru while enjoying a relatively low cost of living!
